Houston Media Highlights Federal Program Connecting Texans with Affordable High Speed Internet

Comcast customer Alisha Jones shared her experience about staying connected during the pandemic, before she introduced President Joe Biden in the White House Rose Garden on Monday, May 9th, 2022.

Houston area media outlets highlighted a federal program created to connect people to free high-speed Internet service. The Affordable Connectivity Program, ACP, gives eligible households up to a $30 monthly credit towards Internet service.

KPRC-2, Houston’s NBC affiliate, spoke with Comcast Houston’s Senior Director for Government Affairs Nicolas Jimenez about the significance of the program in helping close the digital divide in the Houston area. According to the latest Census data, about 400,000 Houston-area citizens have a computer, but no internet subscription. You can watch KPRC’s story here.

KHOU-11, Houston’s CBS affiliate, caught up with Comcast customer Jamila Byrd who recently enrolled in the Affordable Connectivity Program.  Byrd, a mother of two, said the ACP has not only kept her young students online but has also created more family time. Byrd said at the start of the pandemic she used to visit friends’ homes so her kids could get online to do their school work. She’s now connected and grateful for the access.
