Catholic Charities Continues Mission of Service

Volunteers collect food donations

For 75 years, Catholic Charities has provided food, clothing, shelter and a network of support services to people of all ages and from all walks of life and religious backgrounds. Annually, they provide help and create hope for more than 85,000 people as they create better lives for themselves and their families.

Since March 18, they have received more than 5,500 calls for additional assistance – the majority of which are for food and rental assistance. They have also seen a 400% increase in the number of daily calls, and they expect to see the need increase as more individuals reach out due to lost wages.

“Comcast NBCUniversal is committed to investing in the community throughout the year,” said Cyndy Garza Roberts, director of community impact for Comcast’s Houston region. “I’m so proud of how we are able to support nonprofit partners, like Catholic Charities, and so many others to make a positive difference in the lives of their clients.”

Catholic Charities is currently providing “drive-thru” services at three regional food pantries. Each day of service they are providing food to up to 1,400 families across all locations in Fort Bend, Harris, and Galveston Counties.

“Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston sends our deepest appreciation to Comcast for supporting our mission during the pandemic. The gift will help us continue to help families and individuals who were already among the most vulnerable, impoverished members of our community before the threat from COVID-19 was introduced into our daily lives,”  said Catholic Charities President Cynthia N. Colbert, MSW. “Comcast’s support enables us to bring hope and essential help during desperate times through food and financial assistance for rent and other necessities, counseling to ease stress and more.”

To date Catholic Charities has provided more than 214,000 pounds of food to more than 12,000 individuals. They’ve  also provided more than $32,000 of direct financial assistance to help families struggling to pay rent, keep the lights on, and meet other urgent needs.
