Preparing the Future of S.T.E.M.

On Thursday, June 28 the University of Houston – Downtown and Comcast partnered to give students a glimpse into careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Houston PREP, an initiative of the University of Houston – Downtown College of Sciences and Technology, is a six-week, intensive program for middle and high school students. The initiative exposes students to industry professionals and showcasing their expertise in STEM fields. The program’s annual Engineering & Career Day takes place on July 12, however Comcast sponsored an opportunity for the group of students to have an exciting hands-on interactive look into our business.

Douglas Johnson (Senior Manager of Engineering Operations), Bhanie Harilall (Headend Technician) and Robert Myers (Manager of Field Operations) gave the students and teachers a tour of Comcast’s main network facility which distributes our Internet, voice and video services. The tour also consisted of a sneak peek into our platforms that support our Internet protocol and fiber networks and how we utilize them to deliver our technology and products to the Houston area. During the tour, our engineering team provided detailed information on how S.T.E.M. knowledge was instrumental in the development of the platforms, design of the network, and illustrated how S.T.E.M. disciplines are applied in the day-to-day operations.

Houston PREP has served approximately 300 students from the greater Houston area every summer for the last 27 years. That’s why we were honored to host its facility and students in an effort to ensure diverse and outstanding STEM talent for the future.
